Family Style, Mixed-Age Classrooms

Kids in Art Class

At Green Gate, we organize students into mixed-age classrooms on purpose. Why? Because interacting with people of all ages is a natural way to live and learn in society, and we think school should be no different. Mixed-age learning environments foster collaboration and meaningful relationships rather than competition. Older students have the opportunity to teach and mentor, while younger children look up to them as leaders and role models.

Each child's personal, social, and intellectual development follows a jagged learning profile, and children often grasp concepts in spurts rather than in a smooth linear progression. Mixed-age learning environments allow children to work together with students of varying ages and learn content at their own pace, moving as quickly or slowly as needed for mastery.
